MTI Members Engage on Critical Industry Issues at Nadcap Meeting in Pittsburgh

Posted By: Tom Morrison Community,

The Metal Treating Institute (MTI) continued its commitment to advocating and advancing the heat treating industry by hosting a series of technical discussions and Member roundtables during the Nadcap Meeting held June 22–23 in Pittsburgh, PA. The sessions brought together heat treat professionals, quality leaders, and technical experts to review emerging specifications, audit trends, compliance requirements, and industry best practices that directly impact aerospace and commercial heat treat operations.

One of the primary focuses of the meeting was reviewing technical issues on the agenda related to AC7102, the Nadcap Heat Treating Audit Criteria. Participants discussed current interpretations, areas requiring clarification, and opportunities for industry input to ensure future revisions remain practical while maintaining the highest quality standards. Additional updates were provided on MTL activities, product impact considerations, and recent developments in auditor training. These discussions gave Members valuable insight into what auditors are seeing in the field and how companies can better prepare for future audits.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to specification updates being reviewed through AMEC and various commodity committees. Members received updates on AMS 2759 cleaning requirements, AMS 2759 slash specifications, AMS 2769, AMS 2753, AMS 3025, AMS 2771, AMS 2761, and AMS 81200 related to titanium and raw materials. These specifications continue to evolve and have the potential to impact heat treat procedures, documentation requirements, and customer compliance expectations across the industry.

One of the most valuable sessions of the event focused on best practices for objecting to audit findings and successfully obtaining voided findings when appropriate. Through an open roundtable format, Members shared real-world experiences, lessons learned, and effective strategies for presenting objective evidence during the audit review process. The discussion reinforced the importance of understanding audit criteria, maintaining thorough documentation, and engaging professionally throughout the corrective action process.  MTI CEO, Tom Morrison, shared the MTI Technical Standards Committee would be releasing a checklist to help Members navigate voided finding process.

The group also discussed updates surrounding Specification 13100, ASTM E92, and the increasing importance of understanding how standards organizations and aerospace primes are incorporating testing and quality requirements into future specifications. One particularly active discussion centered on RAIL 387 and proposals to elevate ASTM hardness testing recommendations into mandatory requirements. Members shared perspectives on the potential operational and compliance implications such changes could create.

"The MTI events during the Nadcap Meetings continues to be one of the most important venues for MTI Members to stay informed and influence the technical requirements that shape our industry," said Tom Morrison, CEO of MTI. "By participating in these discussions, our Members gain early visibility into upcoming changes, learn from one another's experiences, and help ensure the industry's voice is represented as standards evolve."

MTI's Technical Standards Committee remains actively engaged in Nadcap, AMEC, ASTM, and other industry initiatives to provide Members with timely updates and practical guidance. The information gathered during the Pittsburgh meeting will be shared on the next MTI Technical Standards webcast on July 7 at 2:00 pm ET.

For companies committed to maintaining aerospace compliance and staying informed on the latest technical developments, active participation in MTI's Technical Standards Committee Webcast updates continues to be one of the most valuable resources available to the heat treating community.  Make sure to share the following link with your quality team to RSVP for the July 7 update:  CLICK HERE to RSVP.
