MTI Fire Incident Survey Launches Next Week

Posted By: Tom Morrison Community,

Fire events remain one of the most serious risks facing heat treating operations. While many companies invest heavily in prevention, the reality is that fires can still occur due to equipment failures, process deviations, maintenance issues, human error, utility disruptions, or unforeseen circumstances.

To help Members learn from one another and strengthen industry-wide safety practices, the Metal Treating Institute (MTI) is conducting a confidential Fire Incident Survey. The goal is simple: collect real-world experiences from Member companies, identify common root causes, and share corrective actions that can help prevent similar incidents across the industry.

Why This Survey Matters

One of the most valuable lessons in business is learning from the experiences of others before a problem occurs in your own operation. Every fire event contains important information that can help prevent future incidents.

By gathering data from multiple companies, MTI can identify patterns that may not be visible when reviewing a single event. These insights allow Members to better understand:

  • Common causes of fire incidents
  • Equipment and process vulnerabilities
  • Human-factor contributors
  • Effective corrective actions
  • Best practices for prevention and response

The survey is not about assigning blame. It is about creating a culture of continuous improvement and helping every Member company operate safer, more reliable facilities.

Benefits of Participating

1. Help Build Industry Knowledge

Your experience could provide a critical lesson that prevents another company from experiencing a costly or dangerous event. Every response contributes to a larger body of knowledge that benefits the entire heat treating community.

2. Receive Valuable Benchmarking Information

The aggregated survey results will provide Members with insight into industry trends and common risk areas. This benchmarking data can help organizations evaluate their own operations and identify opportunities for improvement.

3. Learn Proven Corrective Actions

Understanding root causes is only half the equation. MTI will also compile the corrective actions taken by participating companies so Members can learn what worked, what didn't, and what measures have been successful in preventing repeat incidents. No company name will be disclosed from any submission. Only incident details and corrective actions.

4. Strengthen Your Safety Program

The survey findings can be used to support safety reviews, management discussions, employee training, maintenance planning, and risk assessments. Members can use the information to proactively strengthen their fire prevention programs.

5. Protect Employees, Equipment, and Customers

Every fire prevented protects people, preserves assets, reduces downtime, and strengthens customer confidence. The lessons learned from this survey have the potential to save significant costs while protecting lives and businesses.

Working Together for a Safer Industry

MTI has always been strongest when Members share knowledge and help one another solve challenges. The Fire Incident Survey continues that tradition by transforming individual experiences into collective wisdom.

We encourage every Member company that has experienced a fire-related event, regardless of size or severity, to participate. Your input will help MTI identify root causes, highlight effective corrective actions, and provide practical guidance that can make our entire industry safer and stronger.

The online survey will be emailed out Monday, June 22 with a deadline of July 3 to submit.

Together, we can turn lessons learned into incidents prevented and lives saved.
