A Journey from New Member to Presidency
As I approach retirement from the MTI board, I wanted to take a moment to share what MTI means to me.
When my dad passed away in 2009, our company wasn't a Member of MTI, and honestly, hedidn't see much value in joining. However, in 2010, I decided to give it a shot, seeing potentialbenefits in becoming a Member. That single decision transformed not just my business butmy entire professional and personal journey.
Shortly after joining MTI, I noticed the Young Executive Series (YES) program. At first, I hesitated because of its name—I assumed I'd be the oldest participant in the room. To my surprise, I found myself comfortably in the middle of the group, surrounded by peers facing similar challenges and opportunities. The YES program provided invaluable insights and lifelong connections. It was there that I forged friendships and professional relationships that continue to benefit me to this day.
Encouraged by my positive experiences, I wanted to deepen my involvement with MTI. An opportunity arose when a Board seat became available in our chapter. I decided to run for the position and was elected to it. That step was pivotal in my professional growth.
Serving on the Board changed my perspective dramatically. Attending meetings, I realized that many others in our industry faced identical struggles and celebrated similar successes. This revelation—that I wasn't alone in my experiences—was eye-opening and inspiring. It reinforced my commitment to MTI and to my business.
I served my two terms on the Board, and as fate would have it, the pandemic struck just as my second term was concluding. Recognizing the challenges ahead, I decided to stay on for another term. Nearing the end of that third term, I was elected President of MTI, a role that greatly honored me. Serving as President-Elect and then President was incredibly rewarding, and now, as Immediate Past President, I reflect deeply on this transformative journey.
Many past presidents have told me how quickly their year in office flies by. Reflecting on this, I realize just how swiftly the past 13 years have flown by for me. It seems the old saying, "time flies when you're having fun," holds true.
I look forward to seeing what the next generation of MTI leaders will accomplish with great anticipation. I'm proud of what we've achieved during my 13 years with MTI, and equally proud of the foundation built by those who came before me.
My biggest takeaway from MTI is profound, yet straightforward: the more you contribute, the more you receive in return. This organization has provided me with invaluable business insights, personal growth, and, most importantly, lifelong friendships. My wife, Sara, and I have formed lasting bonds with people who are not only friends, but also trusted business partners.
I always encourage everyone considering involvement with MTI: don’t hesitate—get involved. The experience will positively change your professional and personal life, just as it has transformed mine.
Thank you, MTI, for the memories and the incredible journey.
Ryan Fussell, 2024 President of MTI
