One key phrase Jay used throughout is, “AI should support your people, not replace their judgment.”  Jay also gave 3 key action steps for every heat treater to take in the next 90 days in preparation for our next quarterly AI webcast with Jay.

AI is best viewed as a tool that helps employees work faster, think more strategically, and spend less time on repetitive tasks. It can organize information, summarize documents, draft communications, identify patterns, generate ideas, and support faster decision-making.

However, AI does not understand a customer’s specifications, quality requirements, or production risks, in the same way an experienced heat treater does. It can generate answers that sound confident but are incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.

That is why human oversight remains essential. AI can assist with the work, but qualified employees must remain responsible for reviewing, verifying, and approving the final output…especially when it affects:

  • Customer requirements
  • Heat treatment recipes and process parameters
  • Quality decisions
  • Contract review
  • Regulatory or audit compliance
  • Employee safety
  • Technical specifications
  • Pricing and financial commitments

In a heat treat plant, accuracy is not optional. AI should help employees reach better decisions, but it should never become the final decision-maker in high-risk areas.
