MTI ERP Task Force Builds Resources to Help Heat Treaters Choose the Right System

Choosing a new ERP system is a major decision for any heat treating company. The system must support the way work moves through the plant, from quoting and scheduling to job tracking, quality documentation, invoicing, and reporting. With so much at stake, knowing where to begin can be a challenge.

With heat treater looking into options for ERP systems, MTI’s ERP Task Force has been working on two practical resources for Members. First, the task force has accumulated a list of ERP systems that serve the heat treating industry. The list gives companies a starting point for identifying providers to explore when they are considering a new system.

The task force has also developed a checklist of key questions to work through during the evaluation process. It is designed to help Members look beyond a sales demonstration and ask how a system would handle their actual operations. How does it track jobs and their status? Can it support customer and quality requirements? What information will employees need to enter, and how easily can they access what they need? What will implementation, training, and ongoing support involve?

These questions matter because the right ERP choice depends on more than a list of features. A system needs to fit a company’s processes, give its team useful information, and support the demands of its customers. Working through a consistent checklist can help leaders compare options more clearly and involve the people who will use the system every day.

The other two major elements are “What features are included in the base plan and what features are extra?  What does your future road map for evolving the ERP system to meet changing demands, including AI?”

The ERP Task Force’s work reflects a simple goal: help MTI Members make more informed decisions about technology investments. By bringing together a list of industry serving systems and a practical evaluation checklist, the task force is giving Members a stronger place to start when the time comes to select their next ERP system.
