Over the past 12-years, MTI has seen the strength of its membership and financial resources strengthen on a consistent basis.  That strength has provided the resources for MTI to create value in member programs for heat treaters, as well as become a loud voice with affiliated groups on their behalf.

Areas that have seen investment increases over the past years are:

  • Revising the Statement of Limited Liability
  • Redesign of MTI’s website to make it more user friendly
  • Revamping MTI’s online communications making it easier for members to network
  • Designing a customized benchmarking program for MTI’s Monthly Sales and Ops Cost programs
  • Launching a new online learning management system for technical and managerial training
  • Increasing investment in representation at technical specification meetings such as: Nadcap, ASTM, and AMEC
  • Increasing the quality of speakers at national meetings; generating a higher level of content
  • Keeping member dues and meeting registrations constant, when many other associations are seeing increases

These are just a few areas that MTI has used its growing resources to strengthen member companies.  This growth comes from having a focus that is driven by MTI’s strategic plan.  This plan was initially designed in 2003, and is reviewed by the MTI Board of Trustees every 2 years.

At the beginning of January, Tim Levy, MTI’s 2017 President, from Industrial Steel Treating, and 2017 Strategic Planning Chair, Pete Hushek, from Phoenix Heat Treating, led the MTI Board of Trustees through a thorough review process to update the plan.  The Board discussed at length, the threats they felt would impact the heat treating industry over the next 3 to 5 years, and made adjustments in the plan to ensure that MTI is helping build solutions for those threats.

A couple key metrics discussed at the meeting were MTI’s performance, as an association, compared to a study of over 900 associations. Following are some of the results:

ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL RATE:

MTI – 90%       Association Industry Average – 80%

MARKET PENETRATION OF ALL HEAT TREATERS AS MEMBERS:

MTI – 49%       Association Industry Average – 45%

% OF MEMBERS ENGAGED IN AT LEAST ONE ACTIVITY:

MTI – 82%       Association Industry Average – 64%

These metrics illustrate MTI’s high level of member value, loyalty, and involvement, compared to all other associations.  The following are the key elements of MTI’s Strategic Plan, agreed upon by the Trustees:

Mission Statement

To promote the image and added value of our heat treating industry.

Vision Statement

Driving change and prosperity through innovation & networking.

Core Objectives for Actions

  • Educate and Influence Government and Other Regulatory Bodies
  • Stay Ahead of the Technology Curve in Heat Treating Processes and in Serving Members
  • Actively Recruit, Develop, and Engage Younger Members
  • Promote Contract Heat Treating to the Captive Market
  • Evaluate and Promote Services to MTI Members
  • Promote Membership to Prospective Members and Other Allied Groups

MTI’s leadership feels very positive about the future, and has designed MTI’s strategic plan to keep its activities and programming focused on the opportunities and challenges that lay ahead.
